Serving over 45,000 students, the Omaha Public Schools is the largest kindergarten through 12th-grade district in the state of Nebraska. It covers 150 square miles and is made up of 58 elementary 6 schools, 10 middle schools, seven comprehensive high schools, three individualized study centers and a career enter, which offers, specialized training in a variety of high-tech career fields. Offerings are as varied and diverse as the population the district serves and include special education for students from birth to age 21; a gifted and talented program; magnet schools with focus areas on math, science, technology, computer science and communication arts; Academy of Finance; foreign languages; Focus on Medicine; English-as-a-Second Language and Career and Advanced Education Planning. The Adopt-A-School program is one of the largest and most active school-business partnerships in the country and has received national recognition. The Millard Schools are located in rapidly growing southwest Omaha, where enrollment increases have spurred an ongoing building program. The total district enrollment is 17,988. An example of the strong link between education and the community is Project PAYBAC, the district's school-business partnership program. More than 70 firms are involved in cooperative projects with students and teachers. Millard has 20 grade schools, five middle schools and three high schools. The new Millard West High School and Black Elk Elementary School were opened in August 1995. Childcare, before and after school, is available at each grade school. Parents pay for the service, which is sponsored by the Millard
Education Foundation.
Metropolitan Community College is a comprehensive, public community college that offers affordable and quality education to all residents of Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy and Washington counties. Founded in 1974, Metropolitan Community College has the largest enrollment out of six community college in Nebraska and is the third largest post-secondary institution in the state. The College serves annually more than 26,000 credit students and almost 20,000 students in continuing education courses. The College offers 100 career options in business administration, computer and office technologies, food arts and management, industrial construction technologies, nursing and allied health, social sciences and services, visual and electronic technologies and academic transfer. Other offerings include developmental education, continuing education and customized training for business and industry through the college's Workforce Development Institute.
Consistently recognized as one of the nation's best universities, Creighton University is a private, Catholic university operated by the Jesuits. U.S. News and World Report magazine, in its annual "America's Best Colleges" edition, ranks Creighton among the nation's best universities. In addition, Money magazine ranks Creighton seventh on its list of the nation's "100 Best College Buys." Creighton emphasizes a value-oriented approach to education, says Creighton President the Rev.
